[KMTNet 4단계 관측제안서 모집 안내]

한국천문연구원은 1.6m 광시야 망원경과 모자이크 CCD 카메라로 구성된 외계행성 탐색시스템(KMTNet; Korea Microlensing Telescope Network)을 남반구 3개 관측소(칠레, 남아공, 호주)에 설치하여, 24시간 연속 관측이 가능한 세계 유일의 광시야 관측시스템을 구축하였습니다.

KMTNet은 미시중력렌즈 현상을 이용한 외계행성 탐색에 최적화된 시스템으로, 우리은하 중심 방향을 고밀도로 연속 관측하여 2016년 이후 현재까지 약 250편의 SCI 논문을 누적 출판하는 등 관련 분야를 국제적으로 선도하고 있습니다. 또한 우리은하 중심 방향을 관측할 수 없는 기간에는, 국내외 전문가 심사를 통해 선정된 과제(초신성 탐색, 태양계 소천체 탐색, 외부은하 관측연구 등)를 수행해 왔습니다.

현재 진행 중인 3단계 관측은 2026년 12월 종료 예정이며, 이에 따라 2027년 1월부터 2029년 12월까지(3년) 수행할 4단계 관측연구 주제를 모집하고자 합니다. 4단계 기간에도 우리은하 중심 방향을 관측할 수 있는 시간은 외계행성 탐색연구에 우선 배정되므로, 해당 시간을 제외한 나머지 관측 시간을 활용할 수 있습니다.

[Call for Proposals: KMTNet Phase-4 Observing Programs]

The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) operates the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet), a wide-field exoplanet survey system consisting of 1.6-m telescopes with mosaic CCD cameras at three southern sites (Chile, South Africa, and Australia). This network enables continuous 24-hour monitoring, making KMTNet a uniquely capable wide-field facility.

KMTNet is optimized for gravitational microlensing searches for exoplanets and conducts high-cadence monitoring toward the Galactic bulge. Since 2016, these efforts have produced approximately 250 SCI publications, demonstrating KMTNet’s strong impact in the field. When Galactic bulge observations are not feasible, KMTNet time has been allocated—via peer review by domestic and international experts—to a broad range of programs, including supernova searches, solar system small-body studies, and extragalactic research.

The current Phase-3 program will conclude in December 2026. We therefore invite proposals for Phase-4 observing programs for the three-year period from January 2027 to December 2029. During Phase 4, all observing time when the Galactic bulge is observable will remain dedicated to the KMTNet exoplanet microlensing survey. Accordingly, proposals under this call should be planned specifically for non–Galactic bulge time, i.e., the observing periods outside the Galactic bulge season (when bulge monitoring is not scheduled/feasible). 

We encourage members of the Korean Astronomical Society to participate actively in wide-field observing programs using KMTNet. Detailed submission instructions are provided in the attached Request for Proposals (RFP).
