2014 Subaru Winter School 1st Announcement

Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is pleased to announce the “2014 Subaru Winter School” that will be held in the KASI main campus (Daejeon, Korea) from 24th to 27th February, 2014, as an international collaboration program between KASI and National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). This winter school will be co-hosted by the University of Science and Technology (UST) in Korea and the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (GUAS) in Japan.
 
[Purposes]

The main purpose of this winter school is to provide the graduate students and junior post-docs in Korea and Japan with an opportunity to learn the data analysis process of Subaru telescope instruments. Two (Suprime-cam and MOIRCS) instruments have been chosen for this winter school, and the experienced NAOJ staffs will be invited for the lectures and tutoring sessions.

The winter school will offer a series of lectures and data reduction experience with the Subaru data. Prospect participants are graduate students studying astronomy and astrophysics in universities and junior post-docs in Korea and Japan. Participants are expected to have basic knowledge and experience of IRAF and Linux/Mac computer systems, and should bring their laptop computers to the school. Full-time participation is required during the school.

The number of participants will be limited to ~25 (20 from Korea and 5 from Japan) in total, and the selection will be made by the organizers based on the submitted applications if the applications exceed the above limitations. A written reference/recommendation letter by his/her supervisor is mandatory for the application.
 
[Accommodation]

Local accommodations in the nearby guesthouse will be arranged for those participants outside Daejeon area. Transportation between the KASI campus and the guesthouse will be provided everyday in the morning/evening during the school.

Feb 25 (Tue) : Suprime-cam (lectures / data analysis)
Feb 26 (Wed) : MOIRCS (lectures / data analysis)
Feb 27 (Thu) : Q&As, Discussion, close at 12:00
