Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) is inviting applications for the position of project research fellow. Subaru Telescope, NAOJ operates the Subaru telescope for open use observations and is also active in the research and development for its future systemm. We are seeking a few Project Research Fellows who can actively pursue observational research and/or instrumental development using the Subaru telescope. Project Research Fellow is a full-time position (38h45min working hours/week) employed under the scheme of the annual salary system of National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS).

2. Office location: 650 A’ohoku Place, Hilo, HI 96720, U.S.A. Occasional travels to the NAOJ Mitaka campus, Japan.
3. Areas of expertise: Astronomy and/or related fields
4. Summary of duties and responsibilities: The fellow is expected to spend up to 50 % of his/her time to jobs requested by the project he/she belongs to. Successful applicants are expected to actively collaborate with the staff members using not only the Subaru telescope, but also Keck telescopes, Gemini telescopes, and others to increase scientific activities at the observatory. In addition, they are expected to support a part of open use observations at Subaru telescope, such as Subaru Strategic Observation Programs, including duties at the top of Mauna Kea (4000 m in elevation). Applicants should describe not only plans of their own research, but also plans for possible collaborations and supporting roles at the observatory. 5. (1) Starting date: 1 April 2013 or later, but no later than 30 September 2013
(2) Length of appointment: Three years, subject to annual review for the renewal of the contract. If the applicant had been the project research fellow of NAOJ before, then the term will be set shorter than three years so that their total period of employment at NAOJ does not exceed five years.
(3) Salary and benefits: The fellow will receive a monthly salary of 300,000 JYE, monthly location allowance for Hilo, and annual research funds of 500,000 JYE. The travel costs of the fellow him/herself from his/her home to Hilo, Hawaii when first taking up the fellow position will be covered, subject to the travel regulations of NINS (the details have to be arranged with the administration office). 6. Minimum degree: PhD degree in astronomy or related fields as of 1 April 2013, or is expected to have it by 30 September 2013

a. a curriculum vitae,
b. a summary of research activities in the past,
c. a list of publications (Separate refereed and non-refereed papers. For co-authored papers, list all the names of authors.),
d. PDF copy of three major publications, and
e. an outline of research plans. In addition, the applicant should arrange one or two letters of recommendation, to be sent from the persons recommending the applicant. The names of the persons should be identified in the application cover letter.
