Dear Maidanak Observatory users, We are happy to make an announcement that the webpage for the 3rd Maidanak Users Meeting in the coming January held in Tokyo is finally ready and open to public: http://www-irc.mtk.nao.ac.jp/~webadm/AA-AsianNet/index.php?MaidanakUM3 Meeting will be held from Jan. 30 - Feb. 1, 2012 at NAOJ, Tokyo. The deadline for the registration is Dec. 15, although late registration is allowed for those who do not need financial support. [Special note from a Korean SOC member, M. Im] - This meeting is for users of the Maidanak observatory and those who are seriously interested in using telescopes at the Maidanak observatory. Topics cover (1) science done or to be done using Maidanak facilities; (2) Future plans to upgrade Maidanak facilities; (3) Discussions for future international collaborations. We expect to have participants from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Russia, and Ukraina. - A limited amount of financial support is available for participants who need travel support. Please let me know (Myungshin Im at mim@astro.snu.ac.kr) if you wish to receive financial support by December 10, KST. Since the amount of fund is limited, it is not guaranteed that you get the support. - Maidanak observatory boasts excellent weather conditions for astronomical observations. It currently has 1.5m, 1.0m, and several 40-60cm telescopes built during Soviet Union era. SNU installed a 4k x 4k CCD camera (SNUCAM) on the 1.5m telescope, and SNUCAM has been in use since 2006 August. Sejong University and KIAS contributed to the realization of SNUCAM. NAOJ recently refurbished a 40-cm telescope (alluminzing its mirror, etc), and has been using it for asteroid observations for many years. They plan to upgrade a CCD camera for the telescope. Taiwan recently built a small lunar observation station, and a Russian businessman built a small telescope observatory for remote observation. -- Myungshin Im Director, Center for the Exploration of the Origin of the Universe (CEOU) Associate Professor Astronomy Program, Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, Seoul National University, 56-1 San, Shillim-dong, Kwanak-gu, Seoul, KOREA +82-2-880-6585/6761 mim@astro.snu.ac.kr http://ceou.snu.ac.kr http://astro.snu.ac.kr/~mim
