-------------------------------------------------------- First Announcement -------------------------------------------------------- The 3rd Subaru International Conference The 1st NAOJ Symposium Galactic Archaeology: Near-Field Cosmology and the Formation of the Milky Way http://www.naoj.org/SubaruConf11/ May 17-20, 2011, at Laforet Shuzenji, Japan Aims and Scope: Stars in the Milky Way Galaxy and the Local Group galaxies contain the records of nucleosynthesis through stellar evolution and supernovae, formation and evolution of star clusters and dwarf galaxies, and the formation of large spiral galaxies. Rapid progresses in this field --usually called Galactic Archaeology-- have been made by large surveys of old stellar components of the Milky Way and dwarf galaxies and subsequent detailed spectroscopy, observations and theoretical studies of supernovae, massive simulations for the chemical and dynamical evolution. The scope of these studies extends to the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution in general and nature of dark matter, which leads to call the studies Near-Field Cosmology. The Subaru Telescope, the Japanese 8.2m optical-infrared telescope at Mauna-Kea in Hawaii, has been opening a series of international conferences from 2007. The topics of the past two conferences are extra-galaxies (Dec. 2007, Hayama, Japan) and extra-solar planets and proto-planetary disks (Mar. 2009, Kona, Hawaii). We here announce the 3rd Subaru International Conference in Shuzenji, Japan on Galactic Archaeology. We expect to exchange the latest work in this field and promote the studies and discussion particularly by young generations. The Subaru Telescope, which has been contributing to this field, is going to install new camera and spectrograph with wide field-of-view at the prime focus, which has potential to make more significant contributions to the Galactic Archaeology. We expect active discussions on the future studies and collaborations using these new facilities. This conference is also opened as the 1st NAOJ symposium. The conference is planed to cover not only optical-infrared observations but also multi-wavelength studies and theoretical works. Major topics: ----------- -Nucleosynthesis, supernovae, and GRBs -Early generations of stars -Chemical evolution -Milky Way Galaxy -Local group and nearby galaxies -Dark matter in the Local Group Conference site: -------------- Shuzenji is located in the Izu-hanto Peninsula that is about 100km south-west from Tokyo. It takes about two hours from Tokyo by trains. Shuzenji is famous by a hot spring and a temple with long history. The conference site, Laforet Shuzenji, is at the top of a hill in Shuzenji, from which we can enjoy a nice view of Mt. Fuji. Please see the conference web page for details. Accommodations: --------------- Laforet Shuzenji has sufficient accommodations for participants of this conference. Since the site is rather isolated from other facilities, we will arrange the accommodations inside Laforet Shuzenji. Since the number of rooms for single-use is limited, we will request to share the room by 2-6 persons. In that case, the room charge (including breakfast and tax) will be about 8000 yen. If you request single-use of a room, the room charge will be 13,800 yen. Please see the conference web page for details. Scientific Organizing Committee: ----------------------------------------- N.
