"Challenges for the GMT" Swinburne University of Technology, 15-16 June 2010 ********************************************* * Meeting website launched; registration now open * ********************************************* In July 2009, Australian participation in the construction of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) was funded through the award of an A$88M Education Investment Fund (EIF) grant to the ANU. This funding will allow Australia to acquire a 10% share in GMT (split equally between ANU and the rest of the Australian astronomy community through AAL), and will provide for significant Australian involvement in the design and construction of instrumentation for this telescope. While the GMT project will provide a wealth of opportunities in scientific exploration, and in instrumentation and technology development, it will also present many technological challenges that will need to be overcome through its development and construction phase. It therefore seems timely to hold a meeting which focuses on these challenges and, in an Australian context, the related science that is planned for GMT. As such, a two day meeting entitled “Challenges for the GMT?is to be held at Swinburne University on 15-16 June, jointly sponsored by AAL, ANU and the AAO. The meeting website has now been launched and can be found at: http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/CGMT/ Registration for the meeting is now open and can be done on-line at the meeting website: http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/CGMT/registration.html When registering, we ask you to indicate whether you will be attending the meeting reception and wine-tasting (to be held on the evening of Mon 14 June), the meeting dinner (to be held on the evening of Tues 15 June), and your intention to participate in the ‘sparkler?session entitled “So you think you have a great idea for GMT?? There will be a A$50 charge for the meeting dinner, which will be collected from participants at the time of the meeting. The deadline for registration is: Friday 30 April. Details such as the meeting program, a list of participants, the venue for the meeting and its location, as well as contact information, can all be found on the meeting website as well. A list of convenient accommodation options will be made available on the website shortly. It is expected that attendees make their own accommodation bookings. We very much hope you will be able to join us in Melbourne for this relaxed but lively meeting, in which the key challenges for the GMT are debated.
