안녕하십니까? 교육과학기술부에서 지원하는 "세계수준의 연구중심대학 (WCU)" 사업 지원으로 설립된 경희대 WCU 우주탐사 사업단에서는 금년부터 WCU 특별강좌 시리즈 (Kyung Hee WCU Lecture Series)를 진행하고 있습니다. 그 두번째 시리즈는 Earth's radiation belts로서 경희대 Eminent cholar이며 캐나다 Memorial University of Newfoundland 수학과 석학교수이신 Danny Summers 교수의 강의를 아래와 같이 마련하였습니다. Summers 교수는 현재 우주환경 분야에서 가장 중요한 주제인 지구주변의 고에너지 입자 발생에 대한 연구 개척자로서 널리 알려진 분입니다. 이번 7월 2일 제 5회 강의로 "Loss of radiation belt electrons due to wave action in plasmaspheric plumes" 라는 제목으로 진행되는 해외 석학과의 만남에 많은 참여를 부탁드립니다. 장 소 : 경희대학교 응용과학대학 136호 일 시 : 매주 목요일 오후 4:30-5:30 경희대 WCU Lecture Series II. The Earth's Radiation Belts The Earth's radiation belts constitute a very active area of research in space physics. Part of the motivation for this research is that relativistic ( > 1 MeV) electrons, colloquially called "killer electrons", which are generated during some magnetic storms, pose a serious potential threat to orbiting satellites. Relativisitic electrons are also precipitated into the Earth's atmosphere where they can change the electrical and chemical properties of the mesosphere. By providing such a coupling between the magnetosphere and the middle atmosphere, relativistic electron pecipitation could thus provide an important link between solar activity and global climate variability. The Earth's magnetosphere can be regarded as a cosmic accelerator and hence also provides a space laboratory for the study of universal particle acceleration mechanisms.
