FIRST
ANNOUNCEMENT: IAU Focus Meeting 8: "Planetary
Astronomy via Telescopic and Microscopic Approaches"
Dates: 2-3 August
2022 (during the 31st IAUGA on 2-11 August) Venue: IAUGA, BEXCO,
Busan, Republic of Korea + online Website: https://www.iau.org/science/meetings/future/2600/ https://iau2021fm8.kasi.re.kr/
Rationale: Fifty years have
passed since Apollo 11, the first successful manned mission to land on the
Moon. Since then, the planetary science community has grown tremendously,
surveying small Solar System bodies by telescope, sending spacecraft to all
major planets, and sending spacecraft to some of the smaller Solar System
bodies. These celestial bodies have not been reachable in the past, but are now
visited by spacecraft and closely investigated with the aid of onboard
instruments. The research targets in planetary science have downsized
significantly from kilometer to submicron or even smaller sizes. Theoretical
approaches such as light scattering models for understanding the observational
data have similarly grown in sophistication.
In addition, a series
of sample return projects enable us to establish a link between telescopic and
microscopic approaches. Starting with the Stardust and Hayabusa1 missions,
planetary scientists are now analyzing extraterrestrial materials in the
laboratory, under the microscope, and at nanoscale. The Hayabusa2 brought the
samples from Ryugu in 2020, and the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will carry Bennu's
materials in 2023. This research is very important not only for understanding
our Solar System but also for understanding chemical evolution in other
planetary systems. Broadening the lens and studying other planetary systems
will allow us to construct comprehensive references for distant worlds. In other
words, we are making progress and growing sophisticated in Solar System
research with telescopes and microscopes, and we are about to establish a new
frontier in research linking the Solar System, exoplanets, planet-forming
regions, and astrobiology.
In this context, we
organize this Focus Meeting (FM8) during the IAUGA2022 in Busan, the Republic
of Korea. In this meeting, we expect that planetary astronomers who study their
targets with a wide range of size scales using various techniques gather
together to exchange their ideas and recent findings, and provide an
opportunity to set future science goals to be achieved in the coming decades.
