Graduate student opportunities at USTC/PMO

Applications are solicited for highly motivated graduate students to join Prof. Yunzhao Wu in the Key Laboratory of Planetary Sciences, Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Both PMO and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) are under the jurisdiction of CAS, and they set up astronomy department together for training students in astronomy, planetary science, deep space exploration, and Earth sciences. Yunzhao Wu’s research interests are solar system exploration using the planetary remote sensing and spectroscopy, mainly include 1) deriving elements and minerals of the Moon, Mars, and asteroids using remote sensing data; 2) absolute photometry and BRDF model of the Moon and asteroids; 3) calibration and preprocess of optical remote sensing data; 4) planetary geology; 5) space weathering. He has been involved in the processing, analysis and application of series of China’s lunar exploration data. He will process and analysis the upcoming China’s deep exploration missions such as Chang’E-4, Chang’E-5, Mars 2020, Asteroids.

These are also potential research topics for graduates, based on their interests, specialty and background. Students will gain experience in the calibration, process and analyses of multiple remote sensing datasets, photometric model of planets, spectral measurements and quantitative mineral analyses using spectroscopy.
For the research topic of remote geochemical analysis or spectral analysis, students should have background of mineralogy, geochemistry and petrology. For the research topic of data processing and calibration, and photometric model/BRDF model, students should have skills of programming.
There are 4 Scholarship Programs that can be applied. The stipend ranges vary for each program and for master’s and doctoral students from 4000 RMB to 7000 RMB.

Graduate student applications will be considered for Fall 2019 and applications are due March 15, 2019 for Chinese Government Scholarship Program and March 31, 2019 for other three programs.
