[Scientific Rationale]

Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound structures in the universe — unique laboratories where dark matter, hot gas, and hundreds of galaxies have been assembled by gravity over cosmic time. Understanding how this assembly proceeds, how it shapes the galaxies within, and how it connects to the large-scale growth of structure are among the central questions in modern astrophysics. Clusters are also powerful cosmological probes but realizing that potential depends on understanding the baryonic physics that links observable properties to halo mass.

Much of this physics remains poorly constrained. The relative roles of halo collapse, interactions, and the intracluster medium in driving galaxy transformation are not yet fully understood, and the assembly histories of clusters — caught in action in protoclusters at the peak epochs of star formation and black hole growth — are only now becoming accessible to observation. A panoramic view, mapping dark matter, gas, and stars across the full range of environments and cosmic time, is what turns isolated observations into a coherent picture.

This second East Asian workshop on galaxy clusters (CL2027) brings together observers, simulators, and theorists to synthesize recent progress, identify the key open questions, and build the collaborations needed to advance the field.

[Key Themes]

Assembly of Cosmic Structure: How do initial conditions give rise to the cosmic web, protoclusters, and massive clusters across cosmic time?

Gas Physics, the ICM, and Feedback: How does gas flow through and within clusters, and how do stellar and AGN feedback regulate this cycle?

Galaxy Transformation in Dense Environments: What drives the quenching, morphological transformation, and stellar mass assembly of galaxies in groups, filaments, and clusters?

Clusters as Cosmological Probes: How do we exploit clusters and large-scale structure as precision tools for cosmology?

Synergies Across Surveys, Simulations, and Theory: How do we best coordinate the coming generation of facilities and simulations to answer the field's most pressing questions?
