Dear all,

I am pleased to inform you that there will be an online UST talk on radio interferometry as linked in

https://gmc.ust.ac.kr/prog/gmcLctr/global/sub01_08/list.do

You are welcome to join the talk to be held on July 10 (Thursday) at 3:00 pm as follows:

1. Speaker: Dr. Andrei Lobanov   (MPI für Radio Astronomy, Bonn, Germany  )
2. Topic:   The many paths of making science and career in interferometry
3. Date/time:    2025-07-10 15:00 ~ 16:30   (KST)
4. Zoom info:

Password: 546133

5. Abstract
Deriving from the iconic Young’s double slit experiment and a number of subsequent breakthrough developments in physics and mathematics, modern day interferometry covers the most remarkable variety of fields and applications. These may range from mineral prospecting to remote sensing, from medicine to material science, and from fundamental physics to astronomy and cosmology. The latter ones benefit in particular from radio interferometric measurements in which signals recorded at different telescopes are combined for reconstructing images of cosmos at highest angular resolution. Apart from opening exciting scientific horizons, radio interferometry offers excellent prospects for joint endeavors and international collaborations – exemplified by the successes of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). The Max-Planck-Institute for Radioastronomy in Bonn, Germany - my home base for the past 29 years - is a long standing partner of both the KVN and the EHT. Working together, we have achieved a number of exciting results, including most precise astrometric measurements of radio sources and the celebrated images of black hole shadows. In my presentation I will try to use these and other examples to highlight some of the most interesting aspects of making science and developing a scientific career in radio interferometry.

Best regards,
Sang-Sung Lee
