* Session Description: ST28: Recent Scientific Discoveries from
Goode Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory (https://www.asiaoceania.org/aogs2024/public.asp?page=sessions_and_conveners.asp
) . The
1.6-meter clear aperture, off-axis Goode Solar Telescope (GST), is the first
facility-class solar telescope built in the U.S. in a generation. As one of the
highest-resolution solar telescopes in the world, GST with its state-of-the-art
instruments, routinely collects diffraction-limited spatial resolution
photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric data at Big Bear Solar Observatory.
Since its regular operation began in 2010, GST has been providing the community
with open access to observations of the photosphere and chromosphere with
unprecedented resolution, significantly advancing our understanding of the
origin of solar activity and space weather, and the fundamental nature of the
solar atmosphere. Current GST users are distributed over 61 universities,
institutes, and observatories in 21 countries. GST has actively supported
campaign observations with NASA space, rocket, and balloon missions (PSP, IRIS,
Hinode, SO, NuStar, CLASP-2, BITSE, and SUNRISE-III), and other large
ground-based facilities (ALMA, DKIST, GREGOR, NVST). This session will
highlight recent scientific discoveries based on GST data and campaign
observations with space missions and ground-based facilities. In addition,
presentations of high-resolution studies of the Sun using large ground-based
telescopes are also invited. The session topics cover many subfields of solar
physics and space weather, including small-scale reconnection and chromospheric
flows, fine structure of the quiet Sun, coronal heating, solar flares,
filaments and prominences, sunspot oscillations, structure of sunspots and
pores, etc. The session will further enhance the international collaborations
between solar and terrestrial science communities, therefore increasing
scientific output of the operational facilities. * Session conveners: Prof Wenda Cao
