First Announcement

Summer School for Planetary Science and Exploration in East Asia, 2017 (SSPSEEA 2017, Daejeon, Korea)

Recent space exploration programs led by the countries in East Asia require an active involvement of many planetary scientists with creative and collaborative ideas. Especially for the future development in this field, it is of importance for young scientists to expand not only their scientific capabilities but also mutual communications among countries. The second summer school of SSPSEEA aims to educate outstanding graduate students with major in planetary science, bridge friendship among them and to provide opportunity for future collaboration in East Asia. Theme of the summer school is instrumentation in space exploration.

Place: Resom Spa Castle(Duksan)

1 Timeline:

- July 2 (Sun): Registration/Welcome Dinner

- July 3 (Mon) - July 4 (Tue): Lecture by Dr. Emerson Speyerer (Arizona State University) and Prof. Nobuyuki Hasebe (Waseda University). The topics will cover instrumentation for space exploration. 

- July 5 (Wed): Future exploration plans China, Japan and Korea by Long Xiao, Noriyuki Namiki and Young-Jun Choi

- A certificate will be issued to those students passed evaluation by lectures

- Visit KASI(Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) and KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute)

2 Registration

- Registration fee is US$500, including lunch, dinner and accommodation

3 Important Dates

- May 10: First announcement opens

- May 15: Application for registration opens

                            Registration shall by sent by email to LOC contact for each country

- May 31: Application closes 

- June 1-7: Student selection 

                            LOC helps VISA application for Chinese students and others if needed

- June 10: Second announcement with time table

- July 3: SSPSEEA 2017 begins

4 Student allocation by countries

- 15 from Korea, 5 from China, 5 from Japan, 5 from any country: Total: 30

5 Selection of students

- Chinses, Japanese and Korean students are selected in the first week of June by organization committee in each country. Students from other countries are discussed by the organization committee via email.

6 In addition to the lectures by Dr. Speyerer and Prof. Hasebe, group discussion by students is taken place during the summer school. All students are divided into 5 or 6 groups so as to discuss a certain topic related with the theme of the summer school, such as "a key instrument in the future Mars exploration". Time for group discussion will be allocated occasionally on July 3 and 4. On July 5, each group will make a 15-min presentation for all participants.
