KASI-LiCE (Life in Cosmos Exploration) team hosts a series of LiCE special seminars that cover various research areas of exoplanet, habitability, life in the solar system, interstellar objects and missions, biosignature, technosignature, and big data/AI.

Title : Exoplanet reflectance time-series data and the differential entropy of eigencolours

Abstract : Future exoplanet observations will be able to image the reflectance of light from the primary star, imaging the planet in a single pixel. While this will not resolve any spatial structure, the time-series may gives clues as to the nature of the planetary surface. Data from DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory) satellite was used to simulate a set of mock exoplanet time-series spectra for different planetary surfaces, such as mono-surface desert, vegetation and ocean, combinations of these, and all of these with additional clouds. Bartlett et al (2022) showed how the statistical complexity, when applied to this time series data, can be used to discriminate between cloudy and non-cloudy worlds. We expand this work, separating the time-series using a PCA analysis to compute the eigencolours, and then using the differential entropy in combination with the statistical complexity, to further discriminate between different surface types. We find the joint differential entropy of eigencolours to be a good counter for the number of different surfaces, in a manner that the average statistical complexity alone was not.
