SKA-Korea is a group of
scientists from the Korean astronomy community interested in the science and
technology of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and closely related fields. We
are happy to announce the next colloquium talk by Prof. Shane O'Sullivan. The
talk will be broadcasted by Zoom. Everyone is warmly invited to join. Please
find below details of the talk.
* Title: The dark magnetised
Universe illuminated by Faraday rotation
* Speaker: Prof. Shane O'Sullivan (Dublin City University)
* Date and time: 5월 24일 (수) 16:00-17:30
* Venue: Online

* Abstract:
Radio-loud AGN can be observed throughout the majority of the history of the
Universe and are thus excellent beacons for measuring the properties of the
intergalactic medium and its evolution. Here I will highlight recent results
from the LOFAR and ASKAP radio telescopes, that use the effect of Faraday
rotation to illuminate dark phases of gas that are very challenging to detect
by other means. In particular, I will focus on the magnetised gas properties of
filaments (WHIM) and the halos of galaxies (CGM), while also highlighting the
detection of large reservoirs of ionised gas beyond that traced by the
X-ray-emitting intracluster medium. As the quality and quantity of the radio
data improves, we can combine it with other tracers of cosmic structure in
order to better understand the role this diffuse magnetised gas plays in the
evolution of galaxies and the cosmic web in general.
